"It is not enough just to assess an installation’s impact on the environment; one must also assess the impact of a changing environment on the installation. Then, as much as possible, the impact of that change must be integrated into planning and countered."– Cleo Paskal, Columnist

Tools and Resources

Tools/Instruments

Quick Scan Climate Change Adaptation Tool. This tool is designed to assist project developers and assessors in: (1) identifying the level of climate risk in a project using a simple description of the project and its location, and (2) finding sources of information on how to minimize this risk. The tool brings together climate databases and expert assessments of the threats and opportunities arising from climate variability and change.

Climate Change Knowledge Portal. Developed by the World Bank/IFC to provide quick and readily accessible climate and climate-related data to policy makers and development practitioners. The data portal consists of a Google map interface, in which a user can query any location on the globe and receive climate change projections.

Adaptation Learning Mechanisms (ALM). The ALM is mapping good practices, providing information, building knowledge and networks on climate change adaptation.

SERVIR – Climate Mapper. This portal is intended to collect, integrate, and display different levels of climate change relevant information at the global scale.

Opportunities and Risks from Climate Change and Disasters (ORCHID). Using the ORCHID process as a flexible template, the Department for International Development (DFID), United Kingdom, is undertaking further pilot climate risk screening in India, China and Kenya.

Climate Check. This tool developed by GTZ tackles climate change issues from two angles: (1) "Climate Proofing", dealing with the impact climate change risks can have on the sustainability of development projects; and (2) "Emission Saving", identifying contributions of the cooperation programs to mitigating climate change and help maximize these contributions.

UK Climate Impact Program (UKCIP). UKCIP, in collaboration between UK government and the School of Geography at Oxford University, has developed an adaptation wizard tool to help assess vulnerability to current climate and future climate change.

Climate Analysis Indicators Tool (CAIT). This is an information and analysis tool on global climate change developed by the World Resources Institute. CAIT provides a comprehensive and comparable database of greenhouse gas emissions data (including all major sources and sinks) and other climate-relevant indicators. CAIT can be used to analyze a wide range of climate-related data questions and to help support future policy decisions made under the Climate Convention and in other fora.

Esri (GIS). Tools to understand, question, interpret, and visualize data.

Adaptation to Climate Change Toolkit Coasts. Developed by WWF, it consists in a series of tools and resources aimed at anyone with an interest in climate change adaptation for marine turtle habitats, including coastal managers, conservation practitioners, scientists and educators.

Climate Wizard. ClimateWizard, developed by TNC, enables technical and non-technical audiences alike to access leading climate change information and visualize the impacts anywhere on Earth. The first generation of this web-based program allows the user to choose a state or country and both assess how climate has changed over time and to project what future changes are predicted to occur in a given area
