"It is not enough just to assess an installation’s impact on the environment; one must also assess the impact of a changing environment on the installation. Then, as much as possible, the impact of that change must be integrated into planning and countered."– Cleo Paskal, Columnist

What the organisers do to limit carbon emissions

As organizers of the IAIA Special Symposium and the Nordic Research Day on Impact Assessment, we have sought to reduce our share of the carbon footprint of these events. We have thus decided on a number of areas where we will go one step further than what is standard for events in Aalborg and Denmark.

One example of this is that we are developing a Carbon Offset Forest Project, which means that if you pay for carbon offsets via the registration page or fly with SAS to Aalborg, you will help sponsor the raising of a carbon offset forest near Aalborg. The offset amount that we receive from you will go towards buying and planting the trees, so the more you offset the more trees you plant. The forest will also serve other purposes than being a carbon sink; it will purify groundwater, increase biodiversity, serve recreational purposes etc. The details and the implementation of this project are still pending.

Another example of our initiatives is that instead of standard international cuisine, we will serve food prepared from local and seasonal ingredients and meat selected according to its level of CO2 emissions. As inspiration and point of departure we applied the CO2 food pyramid illustrated to the right.

Below you will find an illustration of all the sustainable initiatives we have taken. We have stated the initial ‘0-alternative’ at the left and pointed out the sustainable path we have chosen for these events, and the path we will strive for in future events.
