Introduction
Even though the use of the database is extremely simple, there might be a need for some explanation. This is provided by this page with the title "Help on using the SIA-bibliography" as you can read at the top of your browser-window. The interface to the database basically consists of two pages, one to search in the database with as title "Search SIA-bibliography" and another for submitting entries to the database with the title "Add to SIA-bibliography". (Apart from these two interactive pages there are also two plain HTML-pages, one with an introduction to the field of SIA and the other one is the very page you are looking at now.) The interrogation page is characterized by a number of input boxes and a picture depicting M.D. Nauta's interpretation of SIA, while the page for new entries only contains input boxes. In accordance with these two pages, the explanation is also split in two sections, and the section on searching is subdivided in basic usage and more advanced features.
A little history
A database with bibliographical data on the subject of Social Impact Assessment has been compiled and is made available to you by means of these web pages. The project started originally as a DBase database program running under DOS, written by F. Vanclay in 1989 and distributed on floppies. After more than ten years of service, the technology was outdated and seriously limiting the usability of the data. At the end of the year 2001, F. Vanclay asked M.D. Nauta if he would be interested in upgrading the technology and making this database available through the World Wide Web. The pages you are looking at now are the result of his efforts and it is hoped they will be beneficial to the SIA-community.
Initially compiled by: Prof Frank Vanclay, TIAR, University of Tasmania
Technical design and realization: M.D. Nauta
Original version: May 1989; Current version: April 2003.
