Capacity Building in Biodiversity and Impact Assessment
The Capacity Building in Biodiversity and Impact Assessment (CBBIA) project is a targeted capacity building program intended to promote good practice in biodiversity and impact assessment. It was supported by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2004 until July 2007. The project builds on work carried out by the IAIA Biodiversity and Ecology Section in support of the biodiversity-related global conventions, including the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Ramsar Convention and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). Members of the Section are actively involved in the work of the project and form the core of a growing worldwide network of individuals with an interest in biodiversity and impact assessment.
The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment shows that the world's ecosystems are in serious decline. The role of biodiversity in delivering ecosystem services and alleviating poverty must be recognized in development planning if the Millennium Development Goals are to be achieved. Impact assessment is a key tool.
CBBIA works with partners in many countries to provide guidance and develop case studies to showcase the benefits of biodiversity-based development for livelihoods and wellbeing.
